Living with E.C.C.

I’ve always been someone that recognizes patterns. Patterns of objects, patterns of behaviors, patterns of just about anything. I’m not sure if it’s a good or bad trait, but I do try to use my powers for good. So, a couple of weeks back I noticed a pattern in my own home that has created a bit of an organizing and simplfying monster, with an insatiable appetite for corners. Yes, corners. Corners are these innocent, sometimes ackward spaces that no one really pays attention to. Well, unless you’re me. As I walked around I noticed there was something in every corner of every room in my home. *insert hair raising scream here* How could this be? I’m an organizer and organizers cannot have E.C.C. (excess corner clutter). Oh no. Not me. Never in a million years.

Well friends, the truth hurts. I’ve accepted that I have E.C.C. and that it must be stopped. The question is… how to go about it? I wish I could give a “top 5 tips” list, but the truth is that there’s no quick fix. It’s literally going to take time, effort and an undying creative and tenacious spirit to become ECC-free. I’m willing to put myself out there, chronicling and sharing my journey for the greater good of mankind. Or at least for all of you.

So, the first thing I will be doing is pretty simple, maybe too simple. I really just plan to go through everything and either find homes for items or discard of them. I can’t think of any other way to do it. As I’m going through this process, I’ll be keeping in mind all of the energy and time it takes to do it when I really could of avoided it all together by either not buying things in the first place or making sure the things I bought had a home BEFORE I bought them. *sigh* But I digress…

This is the beginning of yet another new chapter of simplification for my family, although welcomed, it will take some tweaking to make sure it works for us. I’ll come back and give you guys an update of my progress. In the meantime, I wanna know… are you on this journey with me? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I love this! My vice is R.C.C. (random container clutter). I always have containers whose purpose has been abused and they become the random storage places for those things no one knows what to do with. I have recently been on a mission to alleviate these and it’s crazy how many “missing items” have resurfaced. And let’s not get on the time wasted searching for these items. Good luck with your E.C.C.’s!
