2013 is upon us, so it’s time to make our family goals for the year. We’ve been lucky to have achieved most of our goals since we began this tradition and feel that the simple act of creating goals keeps us moving forward as a family. We look forward to it every year.
Last year, our goals were a bit ambitious, especially when you consider that we welcomed our second baby. So, we wanted more simple, attainable goals for 2013. Here’s what we’re working on:
Creating a Legacy Drawer
If you follow Dave Ramsey like we do, you know he’s a big believer in making sure your family is prepared for the future. This includes the final gift you will give them – the information they need in case something happens to you. I know it’s not the most welcomed topic, but the fact is that being prepared is better for everyone. I’m also encouraging my extended family to make time to put this gift together, as well. You can check out the details on what should be included in the drawer here.
Expanding our financial plan
We’re moving full steam ahead with paying off debt, but have challenged ourselves to do more.
- First, we are creating a separate savings account for upcoming expenses ( i.e. home insurance, car registrations, Christmas, etc.). These types of expenses are outside of our standard monthly costs and pretty much inevitable, so we thought it would be better to save upfront. Duh, right? In our defense, we were trying to follow the baby steps to a tee, but it’s either save up now or pay later. Better safe than sorry.
- Secondly, we are going to use cash only – no debit cards. Ahhhhh! My husband came up with the idea and I felt inspired to follow suit. It’s definitely going to be a challenge for me because it will require a lot more planning to make sure I take the right amount from the bank to cover all of our expenses for two weeks. I’m up for it… I think.
- Lastly, we’re instituting one “no spend” week per month. One week per month we will not spend outside of our budgeted amount for the week. As if I didn’t have enough to do, right? I think this goal will be easier than just using cash. Only time will tell!
Planting a small garden
Last year I was all excited about planting a garden in our backyard. We bought everything we needed and then… nothing. We didn’t do anything. Yes, this was one of the overly ambitious goals I mentioned either. Taking care of a then 4 year old and a new baby doesn’t allow much time for a novie gardener to start a garden. But, 2013 is our year. I’m going to start planning everything this winter and start planting once the weather permits. We’re super excited to see what happens!
Creating an electronic filing system
My organized, simplistic spirit desperately needs this goal to happen. Looking at all the paper files we have drives me bananas. Technically, we only have one filing bin – the filing cabinet we had broke, so we’re using one of the remaining bins to hold the files. Still… I need it gone. The plan is to save up for a new computer and an external hard drive, and then get to work. Hopefully it happens by summer. I think I can, I think I can.
Four simple goals for 2013. Can we make them happen? Come back and check on our progress; I’ll be posting often. Wishing everyone a wonderfully simple 2013!
