What We’re Reading

This week, the Detroit Zoo and Costco inspired our book choices. Inspiration is everywhere, I tell you!

A Giraffe Goes to Paris by Mary Tavener Holmes and John Harris

Zach, 4, started a preschool class last week that happens to be five minutes away from the Detroit Zoo. So, of course, we had to stop by the zoo on our way home. While there, I had the idea that we’d study one animal each week, then visit it on our way home after class. We have a zoo membership, so frequent trips like these definitely make the most of it.

In preparation for this week’s visit, we read A Giraffe Goes to Paris and watched this giraffe video on YouTube. Turns out, this is one of many picture books inspired by a real giraffe named Zarafa.  My oldest was really into this book. We may read more about her if the library has other books.

Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to the zoo this week, but we will definitely go next week, weather permitting. We’ll also complete a short unit study on giraffes I purchased from a seller on TPT.

No Matter What by Debi Gliori

I found this book at Costco, and had to get it because it was so sweet. I’m a sucker for a story of love between a mama and her baby.

I also found these books at Costco, and will be using them with Zach. Each has 25 read-aloud stories to teach pre-reading concepts. The stories are short and sweet, too. Check them out if you’re a member. For $7.99 each, you can’t beat the price.

What We’re Watching

We watched the Popular Mechanics for Kids – Radical Rockets and Other Cool Cruising Machines DVD that we got from the library last week and I found that the complete series (all four seasons!) is available on Netflix. These are short shows, but are packed with information about tons of scientific topics. The kids were engaged and asking lots of questions after the one episode we watched. We will be watching these for a long time to come!

What I’m Loving Right Now

Not Back to School Summit Continues

Home Education Council of America‘s 12th annual Not Back to School Summit continues this week, and I can’t begin to tell you how much valuable information I’ve learned. This workshop in particular delivered profound information that will drastically change my homeschool. The summit is free and you can still register for it here.

Jack Hartmann on YouTube

So, I came across this guy’s YouTube channel, and while I do give him a stiff *side eye* for his appropriation of the hip-hop culture, his fun and educational songs are good nonetheless. We definitely had a good time moving and grooving (and learning)!

Finally, here’s a funny for all the parents out there. I saw this and had to share. Ain’t this the truth?!
